Applying Blockchain Technology to Lean Supply Chain Management: An Empirical Study

Despite enormous research interest, there is still a lack of understanding on how to systematically manage lean practices in supply chain networks. This study examines how blockchain technology practices affect the lean supply chain management. An extensive literature review and text-mining techniques based on 3,794 news articles identified the broad patterns of blockchain technology practices in global supply chain contexts. The research model defines key variables related to blockchain-enabled lean supply chain management and the resulting operational outcomes. The hypotheses of this model are tested using a survey sample of 219 respondents of blockchain practitioners and managers in the United States. Empirical findings suggest that blockchain use directly impacts the lean practices of suppliers and buyers. Also, the results show that blockchain-enabled lean practices improve operational performance at multiple levels. This study provides practical implications for future research to further explore the evolving patterns of the supply chain networks along with expanding technology frontiers.
